Im considering looking at a portable battery pack to power my Canon Speedlite 430EX II flash. Any personal experience/recommendations with good reliable performance/price?

This flash eats alkaline batteries and I've been using the Energizer lithiums however it's eating those too but maybe I got a bad batch.

Try using NiMH rechargeable AA cells.  Good ones are not expensive - I've found deals for 4xAA + charger for <$20.  Be sure to buy batteries that do not self-discharge (like Sanyo Eneloops).  NiMH (nickle metal hydride) batteries will charge the flash faster than alkalines and you can recharge the NiMH batteries 100s of times.

External battery solutions will cost > $100.
