Tripods for people who don't use tripods?

The usual tripod buying advice is to get a good tripod and head, because buying a cheap one is just a waste of money. In my case, however, I only very rarely use a tripod, and when I do it's usually for a self-portrait.
So what tripod (or tripod alternative) would the collected experts here recommend for someone who only needs it once in a blue moon, and who would rather not spend a few hundred (or several hundred) dollars on it, when he could buy a nice speedlight, studio monoblock, or lens, instead?

(I'd be using it with a Nikon D90 and a prime or consumer zoom lens.)
