Comparing Live view with TTL shots...

Hi all;

Just trying to fine tune the focus on my 70-300 at 300mm and f/5.6.

I'm in my house, and the longest warm distance for a shooting range I have is only 20 feet.  My portable lamp lighting my target is an LED lamp of unknown color temp.

When I shoot my focus target with live view(contrast),then regular (phase dectection) focus,  the regular NEVER focuses as well.  I've covered the entire fine tune range of +20 to -20 a step at a time.

I'm only comparing on my D7000 LCD and I'm hitting the zoom button six times to view the shots.  I suspect perhaps this is extreme pixel peeping but at this magnification (on the D7000 LCD) the difference in focus is very apparent.

Are my expectations too high?  When "you" do this, do you get pics focused just as well with either technique?  Will the D7000 do this better outdoors with brighter light?

Thanks for any thoughts, answers.
