EF 17-40mm f/4L or EF 28mm f/1.8 Prime? I own 50mm

The 28/1.8 is a good lens, but I would also take a look at the Sigma 30/1.4. I have both the 30/1.4 and a 50/1.8 and there is enough difference in focal length for sure.

Because video benefits from stabilization so much the 35/2 IS is also worth a look, but I would look at the Sigma 17-50/2.8 OS and the Canon 17-55 too. I would not buy a 17-40 if I had a crop camera only.

There is also the current Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.0 and the new Contemporary version coming out the end of this month. Based on the amazing reviews I have seen from the Sigma 35/1.4, I would suspect the new 17-70 contemporary to be an outstanding lens. It will be cheaper than the 17-40, faster, stabilized, and even if it is only as good as the current version, it will be sharper than the 17-40.
