There's always been a positive opinion of the EF-S 15-85mm lens. And lots of help & guidance as well. (Some copies have decentering issues)

No doubt its a good walk around lens. The focal length range is very good. But its an overpriced lens. Zoom creep, the excessive distortion & optically not as great as the EF-S 17-55mm. I bought the 15-85mm since at that point of time I could not afford the 17-55mm. Nevertheless it does produce sharp pictures & has a useful focal length not to forget its excellent mechanic. AF is very quick on mine.

If money is not much of a concern you should for EF-S 17-55mm. Corner sharpness is much much better. The next choice is Sigma's 17-50mm. The last choice being 15-85mm.

On the 17-40mm L, one of my friends use it on 50D. Its not a bad choice though lot of people state its good for full frame & not APS-C. But optically and mechanically it was great. With no IS and not much of zoom, it does not prove its worth for the money IMHO.
