In my experience, a 400mm lens is too big, heavy and unwieldy to take out in the field without a sturdy tripod or at least a beanbag to rest it upon. My handheld shots never turn out well, but my tripod shots (with shake reduction turned off) are almost invariably pleasing.

I prefer the F* 300mm f4.5 (rather heavy itself) or the 55-300 for handheld shots, especially birds in flight. When I travel I leave the F* 300 at home and rely on the 55-300.

Yes normally I take my A*300 f4 and carry a 1.5x converter just in case but sometimes take the 135-400, it kinda depends on the weather (how bright it is) on the day and my mood to be honest.

I tend to travel light (no tripod) most of the time. Each to their own

Thanks for looking,
