I had the 28-300 on the D800, it was nice, but wasn't sharp enough for me.  I didn't find it heavy even when snow shoeing the mountains.  Too much of a compromise for me.  I replace it with the 24-70 and love it.  It feels more substantial, heaver, but not an issue with me. It has the sharp and details I want.  For the few times, that I may need a zoom, I can still use the 70-300 that I used on the D90.
