Thanks again everyone for the great advice, and I guess thanks to some for the perspective tips I learned while you guys agreed to disagree on certain aspects of how perspective changes...

But, I think I had an epiphany and realized my kit lens is something I will be using most in the day, but sometimes indoors or at night so I am thinking of either...

1. Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L AND a Canon 28mm f/1.8

OR

2. Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM ONLY

if you go to photozone.de and look at the 28 f1.8 it is very soft in the corners outside of the center if you shoot wide open or near wide open. If your method is to compose using the outer points you'll get soft pictures. If you compose using the center point and focus and recompose and shoot mainly in the center, you'd be alright stopping down to f2.2

I got the 35 f2 for $289 instead which is better across the frame.

car photography you'd be stopping down on still life so I still go with the 15-85 IS

but if you are committed to only the above, I'd go with #2 - the canon 17-55
