A couple of small suggestions...

By all means get some umbrellas of different sizes, as has been pointed out they are cheap. But don't go too cheap, at least get the ones that have a removable black cover. Then you have the option of 'shooting through' plus bouncing.

One advantage of softboxes vs. umbrellas is that you can get the softbox much closer to the subject than an umbrella...
