Shooting sports with th XE-1 is  similar to running a marathon wearing  hiking boots.

You can do it, but I why on earth wouldn't you use  the best tool for the job?

Sports were photographed for decades befor AF by using fast film and wide DOF. In the 1960s Sports Illustrated didn't wait for AF SLRs to make their name using color phtography. But no one would use those cameras now for sporting event.

If sports photography is a high priority, then you need a DSLR. Even the ancient D200 can track and adjust focus in between shots during 3 fps bursts. The D300 is even better at this.
