Do I agree with Jeff. In my opinion he couldn't be more on the money.

On the D5000, the Tamron is a little sharper but a little slower to focus. Tamron needs to start using their new USD motor. The Sigma is a good lens and much faster to use.

Nikon makes the 17-55 f/2.8 AFS which is fast and very sharp, but much larger and heavier. It also does not have VR while the Tamron and Sigma do.

So, get the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 and be happy. It will be the near perfect lens for using at the parks both day and night. With it's f/2.8 you probably don't also need a f/1.8 prime. Even on the cruise, I think that one lens will do most of what you want. Make sure to use the hood that comes with it to combat flare and give protection.
