Contrast, color and "look" ... 24-70 vs 24-120 f4?

(shopping for my d800e, need a workhorse zoom...both lenses have their advantages for me, but I'm not sure on this issue)
I know the 24-70 is going to be a bit sharper. Mostly in the corners/edges.

That said... am I also losing pleasing color and contrast if I go with the 24-120?

Some lenses just pop with color and contrast.(i'm lumping micro-contrast in with my contrast label) Does the 24-120 compare to the 24-70 this way?

Basically... the VR on the 24-120 would be really nice to have for some of my applications, plus the extra range. But if the images just don't "pop" nearly as well as the 24-70, I may be hard pressed to go for the 24-120.

I don't want to buy overlapping zooms.
