Best (affordable) upgrade option for the Nikkor 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 VR kit lens?

That is just not correct. The 18-55vr is simply an inferior lens compared to the 16-85. Of the kit 18-55 lenses on offer it is great, but it is simply not equivalent to the 16-85.

For really good quality, why not go for the third party 17-50 2.8 zooms for almost the same price as the 16-85.

People really seem to be struggling with the concept of a walk around lens used for nature/landscapes.

Do you really shoot wide angle landscapes in daylight at f2.8??

17-50 is useless for a walk around option in the context the OP mentioned, why can't people accept this?
