The issue is with older versions of the "Digital ICE" automatic scratch/dust removal system. Kodachrome slides have physical layers for the different colors, and Digital ICE would interpret edges in the image as scratches and hairs.

It's claimed that modern versions of Digital ICE don't have that problem.
