The most common range for portraiture is 50 to 85....and I mean for lifestyle shooting...not for the stale portrait and backdrop look. Compression doesnt give more pop...it actually flattens the 3 dimensional look.

You have it backwards. When most photograhers first use the 70-200 they notice how much more life like and 3dimension their photos and especially their portraits look.

50mm is more of a standard general focal length I wouldn't consider it a true portrait focal length. Most professionals consider 85-200mm to be the classic portrait focal length. Some even go as far as 300mm and even that look is very flattering if done right.

All that I know is that there is a huge difference between a portrait shot at 50mm and 150mm. The compression and dimensional look not to mention the bokeh capability's that these longer focal lengths give is absolutely flattering.

50mm still shows some distortion such as making the nose larger for headshots.
