Critique of DPreview S100 gallery & call for advice

I am looking for a 'temporary' camera whilst I save up for something big and hunky, like a GH3. 6D etc. Short term, my needs are great video, wide angle, superb IQ up to, well, city evening darkness, and above average auto focus. Longer term, a swivel display for composing shots and a larger sensor.

I had not even considered a compact like the S100, but was in John Lewis (UK) today and they have a clearout on them at £250 - almost half the new price if I'm not mistaken.

So after a quick hands on (very nice interface, handling and operational speed), I fired up my laptop in store and after reading all the enthusiastic reviews, hit the DPreview S100 gallery. I don't want to sound rude (starting a flame war is not my thang), but the sample photos were not only appallingly composed, but awful! Very very soft, much blue tinge on one or two - (something i noticed on other S100 samples elsewhere), and, well, just nothing that made me go wow! (I have checked out the Fuji X10 samples and they are outstanding.)

I know the SXX/XXX series are great having read reviews before casually, but am puzzled why DPreview published such awful images when most people come here for an honest appraisal.

I did of course check elsewhere, such as on Flickr, but didn't really see anything that mind blowing.

I have always observed that other than their top end kit (1D, 5D Mk II etc), Canon's lesser cameras do tend to produce softer images, or is it just me?

Can anyone who owns an S100 (not an S95 or S110), sell it to me, so I can go pickup the last black on in the shop tomorrow morning?
