So after reviewing all the comments left by the wonderful commenters here, I think I've come to the following:

Pocketable:

Olympus MJU 11 or XA

Manual SLR:

Olympus OM2

Autofocus SLR:

Nikon FM2

I think I'll start with the FM2 on ebay and see if I can find one within my budget and if not keep moving down. For me, auto-metering is a must (aperture priority mode) and auto-focus is preferred but not absolutely necessary. I'm in M43 so my lenses won't work with this system unfortunately... I plan to get a 35mm or 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 lens and use the film mainly for portraiture. Landscape shots are too difficult for me to shoot with film right now with my level of experience.

Thank you!

The FM2 is a manual-focus, manual-metering camera. The FE2 adds aperture-priority auto exposure.
