If the rx1 can have a silent shutter why not the latest nexes?

And here I thought it was mainly to combat perverts! :)

Thanks for the info on focal plane versus in-lens shutters.

As the title says, I'd always assumed Sony was okay with noisy shutters - and adding beeps every button-press - to combat the use of their cameras in "up-skirt" and other "candid" shots.

After the PR nightmare Sony had when their video cameras with Super Nightshot were being used in daylight to "see through clothing" [yeah, right!]... Sony modified all their camcorders to not allow use of the IR functions in normal lighting levels.

So it didn't seem too far-fetched to me that Sony would -want- the shutters on their compact cameras to warn innocent by-standers that a photo was being taken.
