It's inferior to the 18-55 in three areas

1) Close focusing, the 18-55 is able to focus much closer which can be annoying if you're using the 18-105VR as a single lens walk around solution.

2) Size, kinda goes without saying but it is quite a bit bigger.

3) Distortion at the wide end. It does distort more than the 18-55 at 18mm. Correctable of course.

Apart from that it's a great lens, very convinient focal range to carry around, not too heavy and feels well built for a plastic lens. Whether it's sharper than the 18-55 or not I think that's more or less down to sample variation.
