Out of his price range

I've already mentioned the Nikon FM-2n - honestly, I believe there was no more rugged film camera, excepting perhaps the F2, which is now a lot older, likely to have had a much harder life, and more expensive used - followed by the FE-2n.

Finding any one of these for under $100 (particularly with a prime lens) requires a lot of luck.  Ebay is out, the only way  is to find one at a local garage/boot sale.

I also would not rule out a Leica. The M6 is now surprisingly cheap to buy, though lens prices have held up due to the fact that they can be used on the digital models.

This is even more out of his price range - by the time you add a lens if you are under $1000 you got a bargain or a beater.
