Hey dpreview community,

I'm thinking of buying a tele lens for theatre photography and I would like to hear your opinion of the Sigma 70-200 2.8 mk1. ( this )

I have heard the other than the new OS version, this is the best of the rest. At present I shoot with a Canon 5D mk1 and a non-L 70-300 IS USM which just isn't bright enough for indoor.

Is it worth getting this one for, let's say, 400 dollars, over the Canon 70-200 2.8 L/Canon 70-200 2.8 L IS?

Thanks a bunch and HAPPY NEW YEAR to ALL!!!

I had this lens for years - bought it for a EOS 5 film camera in 2001 but was absolutely useless with a really bad front focus. I couldn't take it back as I bout it o/s.. Don't know why, but I kept it through my 10D days but didn't use it much. Tried to get it fixed but was too expensive, but when I got my 7D, the MFA allowed me to correct it and WOW - absolutely stellar performance! Focus was reasonably fast for my needs and, compared to the Canon version, was hard to beat optically.. I've since sold it ($350) and bought a Canon 70-200 MK11.

lessons learnt - brilliant lens but needs MFA as a safety net.

Well, I have a 5d mk1, so MFA isn't an option, unfortunately... This means that buying such a lens from ebay and not having the option of testing it for focus problems isn't a good idea?

I wouldn't. Mine was probably an unusual sample but without MFA, it was useless and I wouldn't take the risk on another without a camera that can adjust for it.
