Cross type AF points?

Cross type AF points?

In many camera reviews, I read this phrase often. Does it refer to the small squares which form a cross, or is it something I have missed? & as they seem to be refered to as something desirable, of what benefit are they over, say, a spot AF point. Am using 7D. Thank's.
