It seems there's some disagreement as to whether or not there is any resampling degradation when the ETC mode is used.....

but, even assuming that there isn't, I am still skeptical that there is any real "zooming" advantage (that is, an improved ability to capture images from afar) to using the ETC vs. cropping in post-process.  I haven't tried the ETC yet, so maybe the point r.e. improved focusing is valid, but I use spot metering for such shots, and haven't been disappointed by the resultant exposures.

So, is anyone sold on the virtue of ETC for stills (I understand its benefit for videos), besides focusing/metering advantages?
