Likewise, I don't see the need for the 40mm f/2.8 when my Tamron 17-50 covers that requirement already. Both seem just as sharp as each other. Still, kudos to Canon for creating such a lens for those who want a cheapie prime to play with.

I wish Canon made an affordable 24mm, 28mm or 30mm f/1.4 USM for APS-C bodies (like the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8) though... sometimes, 50mm is still too long, especially on APS-C and I think many would be happy to get one if it meant having a good walk around prime that gives corner to corner sharpness, especially for night shots. The 24mm and 28mm f/2.8 IS USM lenses are simply too pricey (I got a 15-85 IS for the same price) and won't solve motion blur from subject movement.
