SF to Monterey

Since you will be driving from San Francisco to Monterey, consider visiting Big Basin Redwoods State Park instead of Muir Woods.  Big Basin in much larger, less crowded and has taller trees than Muir woods:

Muir Woods:

  • Established in 1908
  • 544 acres (2 km2), including 240 acres (1 km2) of old-growth redwoods
  • tallest tree is 258 feet (79 m)

Big Basin:

  • Established in 1902
  • 18,000 acres (72 km2), including 10,800 (43 km2) of old-growth redwoods
  • tallest tree is 329 feet (100 m)
