You can go into the camera menu and type out a copyright which is then imbedded on every single image file captured from then on. If someone comes across your image in the future, they can look at the IPTC and see the copyright info you put there.  As another quick example I have noticed is that if I put an image on Facebook, my copyright info is already displayed in the comment section of the image, regardless if I actually watermark it.
