That's right, in an open topped vehicle the wildlife sees just the outline of something that does not fit their frame of reference. They have learnt, mostly, that a vehicle poses no direct threat. However, if you were to stand up, the animal would immediately recognise a human and either run or attack.

Likewise, getting out of the vehicle is even more dangerous, as a single footstep will be felt, as well as heard, by all wildlife in the vicinity. Whilst every attempt is made to get into a position which gives good lighting and a clear unobstructed view, this is not always possible in such densely vegetated country.
