It's not even one of the bags the salesman showed me! It's a Thinktank Retrospective 5, shown here partly camouflaged as it hangs out on my similarly colored couch:

And here's where my cammy fits, as seen from my Lumix FZ-28 (I still love you, Panny! But not really, look at those ugly noise splotches at ISO 800):

Cammy with 18-55 fits snugly this way, resting atop a divider. Hanging on right shoulder, right hand opens bag, grabs cammy from grip side. Voila!

Inside there's enough room for at least two old K-mount lenses with adapter, a Takumar 135mm f/2.5 and a Deitz 35-70mm f/2.8-3.8. Not sure if I really need both of those. There are lots of pockets for lens cleaning equipment, a set of Polaroid close-up filters, quick release shoe, cable release, two extra batteries, and whatnot. There's also a little raincoat for the bag itself.

Inside the bag.

Probably could fit three or four Fujinon lenses in there, and something to snack on, instead of those big old full frame K-mount things.

The whole thing is nondescript, like the XE-1 itself, and it has some little flaps that prevent the hook and loop fasteners from hooking and looping, so you can open it without getting that sound every time. There's also a Steve Huff review on YouTube.

nice bag.

I bough a similar looking bag from Domke, forget the name of it now, holds the XE-1, nikon flash and plenty of room for a couple lenses. Batteries, 500D close up lens and cable release also fit in nicely.

Nice bag, I use the exact same one. Highly recommended.

Soft-hip contouring bags are the only way to go IMHO. Domke wrote the book on these things and I am glad to see others have followed (although Think Tank seems to charge too much for theirs)... but you mentioned carrying snacks or food in the bag -- REALLY??? Crumbs in the bag are almost as bad as the girl at a recent dog show I attended.... she began sobbing because she put a water bottle (the new enviro-friendly types with paper-thin brittle plastic walls) in one of her lens wells ... and well, you can guess what happened... the bottle leaked and the lens well became a water well and soaked her lens and other gear. Shooting a wedding a few years ago taught me the lesson of keeping your bag flap CLOSED at all times when sitting at the dinner table... an unruly (drunk) guest knocked over an entire carafe of wine which cascaded over the side of the table and thankfully missed my OPEN bag by inches! And then there was an assistant of mine who would "steal intelligence" for his catering relatives by hiding samples of wedding hors d'ovures (sp?) in his camera bag... I know darn well he had to clean shrimp mouse from a lens mount on more than one occasion! Food and camera gear don't mix!

I have the Retrospective 7 and like it as well. I would have gotten the 5 if it could carry an ipad. The 7 does, but the 5 does not. In any event they are great bags.

I like this style of bag and have been shopping for a bag that has a zipper under the flap. We are going to Vietnam in March and I would feel more comfortable in a crowd if the top of the bag under the flap zipped which might help deter a pickpocket.

I'm looking for suggestions. I will be taking a Fuji X100 and an XE-1 with the 18-55 lens. I might also rent or buy a 35mm Fuji lens for the trip. The bag must be large enough to carry extra batteries, a few filters and for traveling a 10" tablet. The strap will need to be comfortable as well.

Recently I have been looking at messenger bags or lightweight daypacks and have thought about putting a camera bag insert into it. The problem with the back pack is the convenience and also they do get hot. Vietnam at that time of year is a warm area to travel.

Please let me if you have any suggestions.

Thank you.

Will the Retrospective 5 hold a IPad-mini or a Nexus 7?

Interesting. I got the Crumpler Mild Enthusiast Small. It is a sling/waist bag that holds the XE1 quite nicely.

Yeah. It doesn't have a dedicated space like the 7 -- which can hold an ipad or 11 inch air. But the mini will fit in the front pocket of the 5. Not my blog, but there are some pics here.

shows some comparison shots of two.

Timbuk2 snoop camera messenger bad would work. The camera gear will zip completely in the insert. The laptop area isn't padded, so you may want some sleeve (and it won't zip, though). But it has some zip pockets on the front for memory cards and batteries--admittedly those pockets are a bit small. My small one can fit an XP1 with 18-55 and 35, EF20, and X10. The X10 and EF20 share the slot however.

Bellingham Hadley small, in black. Holds my XP1, all 3 lenses, flash, and iPad...

I just purchased the Tenba Messenger (large) for a similar kit (plus Canon T4i)... it fills the needs you explained perfectly... plus it has a top-cover zipper so you can access gear without opening the whole bag for others to see -- very handy feature in crowds and/or where prying eyes may not be welcome. smaller Messengers from Tenba may fit your smaller kit (only Fujis)... but why a 35mm?

Here is the Crumpler Mild Enthusiast Small. I took these pictures, because even on its website, Crumpler does not show all that this bag has.

XE-1 and lens. The gray protector is just an extra I added from another bag.

The back pocket is large enough for a manual, perhaps another camera like Sony RX100, or even a mini Ipad or Nexus 7 (haven't actually tried to fit those in). The main compartment has a front pocket which is large enough to fit an Iphone, or a couple of filters.

As you can see the main compartment has three more thin pockets in the back which allow you to store SD cards, filters, etc.

You can wear this bag around your waist, or as I prefer, as a sling bag over your shoulder.

WOW what a response on the bags. I can see I have some homework to do. The following is a list of the suggestions. I like the side pockets some of the bags have. It seems like it will add considerably to the functionality of the bag.

Think Thank Hubba Hubba

Timbuk 2 Snoop

Billingham Hadly Small

Temba Messenger

Lowepro Event Messenger

Kata Xoom In

Think Tank Retrospective 5

Crumpler Mild Enthusiast

Thanks for all the posting.

The Retrospective 5 is a nice bag, I have one.

I have been using the X Pro 1 in a Retrospective Lens changer 3. The X Pro 1 with 35mm fits in the center slot (and is down deep so it feels secure) and then just put a lens in each of the other slots. With dividers it could hold a number of lenses in each slot. Bag is bigger than it needs to be but it is skinnier than the Retro 5 so it conforms to my body better.

Well, while we are on the subject of camera bags for the X-E1, here's one I like because I can also carry my iPad in the back pouch and the bag is compact yet roomy enough to hold several lenses, the body+lens and a bunch of other stuff. Has two side pouches as well. And, it's rather light to carry.

My new bag is the Lowepro Event Messenger 150 in Black:
