For autofocus to work, it needs a good contrast subject with sufficient light. A white wall or black sky will not work.  The areas used for AF are the regions in/around the square boxes in the viewfinder, but it's not exactly the size of the box.   Also, the center point is best for AF. The other AF points are less good and recognize contrast difference (e.g. a white/black line) in one dimension.
