I could never get rid of my 70-200mm f/2.8. It's ideal for indoor photography of sports and other events.

If you are looking for a compact lens within the same range, I would look into the 70-300mm VR. The quality from 70-200mm when shot wide open is excellent, and 300mm is very sharp when stopped to f/8. It is an excellent daytime walkaround lens.

I compared both. The 70-200/4 is much better than the 70-300mm @ 200mm. If you add in the superb VR3 I think the 70-200/4 is well worth the extra money.
