The D600 works the same way. It doesn't have a setting in the menus though (that I can find). Simply move the on/off button over to the bulb and the LCD will turn on the backlight. It stays on for a few seconds. I think the setting in the menus allowed you to have it on permanently whenever the camera was in the ON setting (without having to move it to the bulb).
