Tamron 28-75 f:2.8 performance

I recently purchased a used Tamron 28-75mm f:2.8 lens, and am wondering if the performance that I am finding with the lens is typical. My question has to do with the softness of this lens at f:2.8. My copy seems to be very soft at this aperture. I've used the FoCal utility to confirm that the microfocus calibration on my D300 is correct, and can verify that when the lens is set at other microfocus settings, the image is worse. I'm attaching two images - one shot at f:2.8 and the other at f:5.6. The difference is obvious to me. Any thoughts?
