J1 advantages over V1:

  • body height 61 vs 76 mm (to fit in a flat suitcase)
  • built-in flash (if ISO 100 gide number of 5 m is enough for you)
  • simpler construction (no mechanical shutter)
  • sensor dust shield glass (likely cheaper to replace than the sensor itself)
  • more body colors available (I like the red one)

V1 advantages:

  • viewfinder
  • mechanical shutter (flash sync speed of 1/250 s vs J1's 1/60 s)
  • movies (1072x720) may be recorded by just pressing the REC button in still photo mode
  • external microphone input
  • much larger internal memory buffer to uninterruptedly record longer series of photos in burst modes
  • much more capable battery (compatible with Nikon D7000)
  • hot shoe / accessory port (though non-standard)
  • higher LCD resolution
  • additional IR remote sensor on the back of the camera

Both J1 and V1 are very good cameras IMHO.
