I was looking to purchase a D700 body from a private party. To be sure the camera wasn' t gray market, I phoned Nikon. They not only confirmed the camera was a genuine USA retail copy, but also told me the name of the original merchant and the month/year Nikon shipped the product to the merchant.

It's definitely worth calling Nikon. They may have information about the lens in question.
