While you can do this, few people will recommend backing up your previews on a regular basis. It takes impractically long to do, and is not necessary in any case to a complete functional recovery.

Quite.  You could delete the previews and Lightroom wouldn't mind at all - you wouldn't lose anything except a little bit of time, as if a preview isn't there then Lightroom has to create it next time the image is displayed in Library module.
