for the new version of Sony 70-200G II, it's suppose to be sharper than current Sony, and weather sealed and won't be inexpensive. In used market you can find current Sony 70-200G for around $1500, which is very well balanced lens: sharp enough at 200mm f2.8, pleasing bokeh, focus limiter switch and well build quality.

The other choice would be Sigma 70-200 OS HSM. It's at least as sharp as Sony if not touch little sharper. It will likely loose little contrast to Sony, bokeh is perhaps not as smooth and lack if focus limiter (not a problem for A99 user). The biggest problem is lack of AF-D support which is a big selling feature of A99.

So all in all I would either wait for the new Sony next year, or get a good, used one of current version.

When you say next year,  you mean as in a couple days ? or perhaps sometime in 2013 ?  I can see me getting caught out waiting  Like a Google Nexus 4 !

I can't find any used 70-200G, which was my first option.  The current Sony 70-200 does't support AF-D either does it ?

Thanks for the tip, I had forgotten about AF-D support, in my defence I have only had the A-99 for a day
