I've owned both the nFD 50/1.8 and 50/1.4 and used both with my NEX-5. The 50/1.8 is a good lens, but the 1.4 is better built and I didn't find any use where I liked the 1.8 better than the 1.4. The 1.4 is a bit soft wide open, but still pretty usable.

The down side of most Canon FD lenses, is that they're a bit tricky to mount on adapters (adapter needs to be set to Open when mounting and Lock when in use). If you forget to Lock it, the aperture will stay wide open regardless of how it's set.

Here are a few NEX-5 nFD 50/1.4 shots - mostly done wide open.
