This could be the depth of field using different apertures.

You could try choosing one AF point by composing on a static subject (flower) and moving the single point spot on the subject.

As for the dog, the depth of field is slightly behind it's head toward the body. I think the dog is slowly walking so I'd try single AF or portrait mode (right zone) with low or high speed continious (use the burstrate) and a slightly faster shutter speed (freezes the action, not sure if you want that though).
