You may have a point.

But it does not have to mean this is the logical explanation of a D400 dx sized AF unit. It could very well be that they kept the new FX version more centered because current PD sensors may show too much variation in accuracy when covering the outer parts of the scene with current FX glass.

There is also something that struck me while using the D600: if you put it on a tripod you may just as well use live view. It's not meant for sports, but it's not that slow either. With wide portraits, even with macro and of course with landscapes you can use the CD-sensor at the far edges of the frame. If Nikon manages to make the effective AF area a bit smaller, it may cover much of our needs of a wider AF array.
