After shooting several hundred more shots I can say that the AF is not what it should be and Sony does need to improve it in two ways. First, allow for a much smaller focus box so that the focus is where we think it is rather than something else close by. Second, improve the speed and accuracy of acquisition. Due to the shallow DOF it is more important that the camera gets the right point in focus quickly. Opening the lens to f2 during focusing and stopping down when the shot is taken would help improve the accuracy.

One can get good sharp images but it takes more work than many people want to expend and too often you can miss focus and not realize it until it is too late.
