2 further thoughts:

You can use cheap Ebay clones of Canon OC-E3 ETTL capable cord to link a Yn 622C to an Ex Speedlite - that should still retain ETTL & remote M power fraction setting

- and / or -

there are ways of mounting your speedlites in Softboxes or in Umbrellas, such that they lie flat along the modifier axis. So the 622C can remain directly attached, while the axis of illumination reverts to optimal. There are hundreds of examples on Flickr. Cheers
