I see many people here dismissing IS on the ground that it's "just for video".

If this 35 is similar to the 24 and 28mm lenses, it will have quite strong focal breathing, which will make it not as useful as one might think for video.

On the other hand, these new lenses have many advantages over faster lenses, although most of these will only start to matter once we'll get to 50mp bodies. The point of IS then won't be to hand-hold a 35mm lens at 1/4th second, it will simply be to hand-hold a 35mm lens at the usual 1/focal speed. Just look at what people have to do with the D800 - use the 1/APSC - equivalent focal speed. This will only get worse as megapixels increase. Second, because it's just an f2 lens, it's sharper wide open, and with less chromatic aberrations, which can only help AF in good light - again, something that will prove more and more useful as megapixels increase.

Additionally, it's smaller and lighter than its f1.4 counterparts, and that may very well be a strong asset for some of us.

You make a good point About magnification of high mpxl.  If we get a 46 mpxl +, I'll relook at it.
