Flash is a tool. Rather than patting yourself of the back for not using flash perhaps a better approach is to determine how and when flash is appropriate.

I love fill flash - use it all of the time in bright light, but some times it actually adds its own shadows - like this

but even more importantly in the case of my OP, fill flash would have changed the color of the lighting and would have taken away from the golden color of the sunsets light on my wife's face.

I guess if I had been prepared for this I could have gelled my flash to make it match the color temperature of the sunset, but I was a guest at a wedding with just my NEX-7 and I didnt bring lighting equipment
