Curiously, the lack of live view has never been an issue.  The bulk of my photographic experience in the past was with a rollei sl66 and a haddelblad and a hand held light meter.  I shot mostly in B&W and knew exactly what the final print would be like when I took the photo.  I am still learning how to deal with digital image making, but am starting to get confident that I can reproduce what I see composed in front of me.

Regarding your SD1M, some of the lenses are very good & they seem to be getting better.  A previous post mentioned the 24-70 as one that can deliver good results.  If you have an accommodating supplier - test a few out.  I think the camera body/sensor itself is great and so easy to use.
