Even in my 20x24' garage I could use another 6 ft from my subjects. What ever the situation just have fun and don't box yourself in to having to do it like everyone else. Joel  Grimes for example often uses a 24mm lens for his studio portraits and is fairly close to them. His work is very well known. You can make do just fine with the space you have. Speed lights work great in small spaces, nothing wrong with hard lighting particuarlly when used from the back or sides. It's not about equipment or brand / cost, it's about understainding light and making use of it.
