I've never heard of testing a lens for decentering by checking to see if it cuts a straight dof line, I've only seen people take test shots and checking to see if the right side is sharper than the left, which is what I do. I'll have to try your method sometime though.

All lenses are slightly decentered to some degree. What matters is if it actually has a visible impact on your pictures.

I shoot a wall of text which I think is a pretty tough test. I did have a 25mm f1.4 Panasonic once that never got tack sharp on the right side. A second copy of the lens performed much better. I bet that slight decentering would have never been noticed by anyone, including me, if that the st wasn't done.
