Hopefully, the Redmond puppet has been dispatched on account of lack of relevance and nothing to say that is directly responsive the the original post.

I run Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit with 8 GB of memory quite seamlessly. I have no hesitancy to recommend it. The generic default kernel already has PAE enabled.
