I have the same lens.  A few ideas:

- Get a focus-confirm chip, like the dandelion.  I've had improved keeper rate since using one.  You can use MFA with it, either with the camera, or the chip itself.  It is still somewhat imprecise, though.

- Focus - bracket your shots and pick the best one later.

- Use eye-fi card and ipad to review shots and adjust focus during the session.

- Tether to laptop using a usb cable, and adjust focus as you take the shot.

- Calibrate the distance scale.  They are sometimes off, but are easy to adjust - google around for instructions.

Still, the best way to use this lens is stick it on f/8, and focus a little bit in from infinity, and just fire away.
