I like the compact size, which will make carrying them around so much easier. However, I am worried that the image quality won't be as good as the Nikon 5100 or Sony A37/A57.

IMHO, the NEX is better than the micro 4/3 offerings, as the sensor size is larger thus giving you better low-light performance.

Everything is a trade-off and the dSLRs might have speedier access to features, but the NEX's are no slouch once you arrange the custom buttons and functions. Really it just depends on what you need. If speed is essential, go with a dSLR. If portability is important while maintaining image quality, go with NEX. Even smaller portability needed? Go with micro 4/3 or advanced compacts.

Since the lens is a huge part of the equation, buying a model or two behind current bodies gives you money to use towards glass and a flash. With a dSLR you have access to a lot of lenses, more so than NEX or m4/3. (But they are catching up.)
