Have D800E, 24mm, and now XE-1

I would get the D800E with 24mm F1.4g.   You can make a small kit with the 24mm and the 50 f1.4g.  The D800E with the 24mm is incredible for buildings.   Sorry,  the XE-1 is a great camera but will not match the D800E 24 combo for image detail,  dynamic range etc.

The small D800E kit I described above may be all you need and it fits in a relatively small bag.  This is my favorite kit.

Further with the 24mm you can still keep family in the photos workout excessive wide angle distortion that you will get with the 14mm.
